Clay Semenkovich, M.D.
Clay F. Semenkovich, M.D., is Chief of the Division of
Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research, the Program Director of the
Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism fellowship program, a Professor of
Medicine and of Cell Biology and Physiology, and Director of the CNRU’s Animal
Model Research Core Laboratory. He has
served as Assistant Program Director of the University's General Clinical
Research Center and is the founding Program Director of the Building
Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Program at the
University. He has been Associate Editor of Diabetes, Associate Editor of the
American Journal of Physiology, is currently a member of the Editorial Board
for Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, and a permanent member
of the Metabolism Study Section for the NIH. He has held a number of leadership
positions in the American Diabetes Association, most recently Chair of the
Research Policy Committee, and is currently a Councilor representing
endocrinology for the Association of Subspecialty Professors.
He has received several Distinguished Service Teaching Awards from the
Washington University School of Medicine. The Washington University Medical
Center Alumni Association recently honored Dr. Semenkovich by the establishment
of a Distinguished Alumni Scholarship.
Dr. Semenkovich's
research is focused on connections between diabetes, insulin resistance and
heart disease. He has used genetically manipulated mice to develop strategies
for reversing insulin resistance, hypertension and diabetes, and to identify
new mechanisms underlying both diabetes and atherosclerosis. He has also
translated these observations to humans to enhance our understanding of how to
alter risk factors for vascular disease.
